Dark As Night - Tips On How To Achieve a Matte Black Eye Look

Dark As Night
Tips On How To Achieve a Matte Black Eye Look

One of the looks I receive the most questions on is how I achieve a matte black smokey eye without looking like a raccoon or having it look patchy on the lids. I believe after years of wanting to be a goth girl and through trial and error I have learned tips and tricks throughout the years in order to make a gorgeous matte black eyeshadow look that lasts all day long without needing touch ups. I feel this look is something anybody can do, and that you don't need a specific eye shape in order to achieve this without it closing up the eyes. I hope you find these tips and tricks to be useful!

LethalKitten's Guide to a Matte Black Smokey Eye

If you want a beautiful black smokey eye to last all day, you will need to use a primer!

Let's be honest, a lot of people try to go without using an eyeshadow primer. I know a lot of people feel that if the eyeshadows are super pigmented or are from high end brands that they don't need to worry about priming the eyes. However, this is a misconception due to a primer not only allowing your eyeshadow to last longer, but it also helps smooth out the eyelids and create a great base for the following products I will mention later. With matte eyelid colors they will show every flaw in your eyelid, and priming them will help tremendously with this! This is definitely something I highly suggest using!

Start with adding your crease colors before adding your eyelid colors in order to help with the blending process later!

Blending is key with this look, and black eyeshadow is one of the most difficult shades to blend out on it's own. If we create our crease transitions before applying the black shadow later, it will make everything easier to blend! I suggest sticking with light gray, taupe, and medium brown shades inside the crease. You could also add wine shadows such as MAC Sketch or Sigma Elysees into the crease (which is something I do normally). MAC Sketch also will help the transition from black to medium grays go smoother since it's a darker shadow with dark brown under tones. This will also create a softer look!

To get the best pigmentation out of your eyeshadows use a base!

I know it's going to sound like I use too many products but trust me here, this will up your smokey eye game. After you create you apply your crease shades apply a black gel eyeliner with a shader brush onto the eyelid as a sticky base. This will allow for the matte shadow to apply better to the eyelid and to also make them appear darker and more rich in pigment. I personally use the Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Eyeliner on my lids since it's very easy to blend out.

The higher the quality matte black eyeshadow, the better the results.

I'll be honest, it's extremely hard to find a rich matte black eyeshadow at the drugstore that is not patchy in application and is black and not gray. I would highly recommend to purchase a great quality matte black eyeshadow like Sugarpill's Bulletproof in order to create this look. However, it's not an essential, but I find that the pricey black eyeshadows are dark as night and apply smoothly in application. If you are unable to spend the extra money, just do with what you've got!

When applying the product pack it onto the lid and avoid using swiping motions!

Black eyeshadow is extremely tricky, especially when it's matte black. To get the best results that are even in pigmentation I recommend using a flat shader brush and packing the color ontop of the base that you applied before. If you use sweeping motions you will disturb the eyeshadow and it could result in patchiness. This process takes a little bit, so just be patient!

The seamless transition is all what we have left!

The most tedious part to me is once you apply the matte black eyeshadow and have to blend it in order to create a beautiful transition that is well blended. This is why we made the crease transition earlier so that we make it easier to blend now. At this point you will want to go in with your matte black eyeshadow on a small fluffy brush and apply it into the crease. By doing this you may disturb the pigmentation and you may have to repack the matte black on with the shader brush like we did before. If you are having problems making the black less patchy in the crease, go between MAC Sketch (or any other wine shade) and with the transitional shades you used earlier. This is a step that will take a long time so just be patient. I promise it will turn out!

I hope all these steps helped you achieve a perfect matte black smokey eye
x

Eggplant and Metallic Silver Cut Crease Eye Look - New Years Glam - House of Lashes Boudoir Review

Eggplant and Metallic Silver Cut Crease Eye Look New Years Glam
House of Lashes Boudoir Review

This look is inspired by an eye look I did years ago when I first got into bright and more dramatic styles of makeup. With this look I did a traditional cut crease with carving out the eyelid with NYX's jumbo eyeshadow pencil in Milk with a shader brush. This is a style I don't do often, and find to be challenging from time to time due to it being difficult to get both eyes to match. This is definitely one of my favorite looks to do since it has such a dramatic effect,

House of Lashes Review
This was my first time using House of Lashes eyelashes in a look after purchasing them during the Black Friday sale. The lashes I chose to wear were in the style Boudoir, which is definitely a flirtatious and playful style. These lashes are of impeccable quality and have a lot of detail. The lashes themselves have a wide variety of short and long eyelashes to give a more natural yet dramatic look to the eye. In the inner corner the lashes have a beautiful transition from the shortest lashes to the longest in the center of the lash. The band is very thick on these as well, which not a lot of people like. I personally love thicker banded lashes because I feel they are better quality and they keep their shape better. With these lashes it took me one application to get perfect, whereas with my cheaper eyelashes it takes at least 3 times if not more to place them correctly. My favorite drugstore lashes are the Kiss brand lashes in the style 'Pretty' and feel these are somewhat similar, but are a much higher quality of those. I will definitely be repurchasing more lashes from House of Lashes in the future!

L'Oreal EverPure Sulfate Free Volume Shampoo and Conditioner Review!

L'Oreal EverPure Sulfate Free Volume Shampoo and Conditioner Review!

This week I tried out the L'Oreal EverPure Sulfate Free Volume Shampoo and Conditioner. This combination from L'Oreal is formulated for fine, flat hair, that claims to add shine and body to your hair without weighing it down. It claims to be great for color treated hair and that it doesn't contain harsh sulfates, salts or surfactants that can strip and damage hair. These products claim to be 100% sulfate-free, paraben-free, contain no harsh salts, dye-free, contain no gluten ingredients, and is a vegan product. All this information about this product I found on the L'Oreal website and printed on the product packaging itself.

Hope you enjoy the review!

___________________________

Before we start this review I would like to explain that my hair is extremely long and that it is over 4 inches past my butt. My hair is oily at the scalp, but dry at the ends due to the length of my hair. My hair is flat, fine, and has a wavy texture to it that likes to get tangled up easily. My hair color is my natural hair color, and I do not color treat my hair.

Shampoo:
This shampoo is an absolutely amazing product! I really feel it cleansed my hair well and that it added a lot of volume to my hair that my normal shampoo does not. My bangs were a lot fluffier than normal, and my hair definitely had a lot of volume boost to it that I am not used to. I could definitely tell after the first use of using this product that it really made my hair volumized. This product lathered rather well and you do not need a lot of product per use. Less is more when using this product, meaning you will get a lot of value out of buying this product. I also noticed after the first few uses of using this product that my hair dried a lot faster than normal. Generally my hair takes 2-3 hours to air dry, and after using this product it cut my drying time in half which is something I really enjoy in products. Since this product is a volumizing formula, I was really worried that it would strip the oils out of my hair, or weigh it down. To my surprise it cleansed my hair just as well as my OGX Repairing Awapuhi Ginger Shampoo (which is my holy grail), but instead gave me the volume boost that it claimed to give. Overall I would definitely purchase the shampoo out of this line, and definitely recommend it for those who have fine, flat hair like me.

Conditioner:
Unfortunately, I am not the biggest fan of the conditioner out of this line from L'Oreal EverPure. This conditioner isn't the worst, but isn't the best either. Since I loved the shampoo, I would have assumed that I was going to love the combination together, but unfortunately this product just did not do it for me. This product first off weighed down my hair and I could definitely tell that it didn't do what it claimed even after the first use. It also left a weird film like residue in my hair, which made it hard to brush out. It made my hair feel extremely dry, as if I never put conditioner in my hair and made it get a lot more knots than normal. On occasion I use the L'Oreal Ever Curl Shampoo and Conditioner, and have a great experience with that conditioner and love using it. I was hoping for this one to work just as well as that one does for me since that one leaves my hair feeling extremely soft, and makes brushing my hair go by super quick. Unfortunately, I would not repurchase the conditioner because of this, and feel that there are better conditioners throughout the L'Oreal EverPure Sulfate Free line.

___________________________

Pros:
- Easily found at any drugstore or super center.
- Lots of options throughout the line for different hair types
- Able to be couponed and have sales on these products all the time.
- The scent is extremely nice and not over powering unlike other products
- Sulfate-free
- paraben-free
- no harsh salts
-dye-free
- vegan ingredients
- contains no gluten
- Cheaper than a lot of other shampoos/conditioners with the same claims
- Shampoo does not strip the hair of oils
- Shampoo volumizes the hair noticeably even after the first use
- Cool holographic foiled packaging

Cons:
-Expensive for a drugstore product (Being around $7.99 per bottle)
- Conditioner does not do what it claims
- Caps on product are hard to close

Apricot Eyes - Colourpop Viper Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick Review!

Apricot Eyes
Colourpop Viper Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick  Review

This look is inspired by Apricots and fall colors. This year I have been very inspired by orange and berry shades, especially around this time of year. This look features a orange smokey eye with touches of burgundy and dark brown along with a golden highlight. I followed up with this beautiful Colourpop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick in the shade Viper to bring out the purple shades in my shirt. The inner corner highlight is Colourpop's Super Shock Eyeshadow in the shade Fringe, which matches beautifully with the necklace I paired with it.
Hope you enjoy this fall inspired look :)

Colourpop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick in Viper Review:

A few months ago I received Viper as a gift with purchase after making my very first Colourpop order. I was very excited to try it being that the swatches showed it as a gorgeous raspberry/plum shade that is perfect for fall.
The things I like about this lipstick is how opaque it is. This lipstick in particular only needs one coat to be opaque on the lips and is not streaky or patchy when applied. I also love the Colourpop lip wand and found the doe foot applicator to be very precise and easy to use. It gave me the crisp lines that I was looking for, unlike a lot of liquid lipstick applicators. It reminds me a lot of the Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick's doe foot applicator, which is a favorite of mine. It's also only $6 which is a wonderful price.

As for what I don't like about this lipstick is how drying it is. There is no way around to making this extremely comfortable on the lips. It didn't flake while wearing it, but it made my lips feel like the Sahara Desert until I took it off. It wasn't unbearable by no means, but I definitely could feel it on my lips so be aware of that. Another disadvantage to this lipstick is that it stains horribly. You will have a medium pink stain to your lips for around a day.

To wear this lipstick comfortably I would recommend exfoliating your lips beforehand. You can easily make a DIY scrub mixing an oil (such as olive oil or coconut oil) with brown sugar. I would also apply a lip balm heavily for 15-20 minutes before wearing this lipstick. Make sure to wipe it off before application of the lipstick. My favorite lip balm as of now is the Smith's Rosebud Lip Salve in the original flavor/scent. By doing these steps I feel it decreased the dryness of the lipstick and made it more comfortable while wearing it all day. If you feel it is getting too dry you could also apply a lip gloss over it, but that will get rid of it being a matte formula.

Would I repurchase? Yes I would. I want to try more Colourpop liquid lipsticks in the future due to the price point and wide variety of colors available. I would recommend reading reviews on each individual shade before purchasing.

Galaxy Inspired Makeup - Featuring Colourpop Bae

Galaxy Inspired Makeup
Featuring Colourpop Bae

Colourpop is one of those brands that is somewhat new to me as a consumer. I just have recently made an order and ordered a few different products to try out. I bough a few of the super shock shadows in different formulas, blush, highlighter, lippie stix, gel eyeliner, and a ultra matte liquid lipstick. After being in more makeup groups on Facebook and being surrounded by Colourpop I thought why not give in and try it. One of the first shadows that had intrigued me was Bae. This is a burgundy based shadow that leans more on the purple side. It also contains blue shimmer throughout the product which is nice. However, the shimmer was just not enough for my taste so I had decided to add a dusting of Sugarpill's Lumi on top applying it dry with a fluffy eyeshadow brush. Overall I have been impressed with Colourpop and I will continue to update with my looks as to what I recommend and don't recommend from the brand.

Alchemy - Dark Purple Makeup Look

Alchemy - Dark Purple Makeup Look

Today's look I wanted to try something new which is dark purple lipstick. Since I didn't own one I went ahead and mixed Kat Von D's Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Echo in equal parts with Jeffree Star Cosmetics Velour Liquid Lipstick in Redrum. It created the most beautiful purple shade that is wonderful for Fall. I paired this lipstick with a neutral based purple smokey eye, winged eyeliner, falsies, and some interesting accessories. Hope you enjoy!

Matte Creme Lip Crayon by Bite Beauty Review

Bite Beauty Matte Creme Lip Crayon Review
#TheMatteCremeLip
By: LethalKitten

This month I received my first VoxBox from Influenster. Within the box it contained the new Bite Beauty Matte Creme Lip Crayon's in the new shades Red Velvet, Cava, and Glace. I have never tried Bite Beauty and was super excited to try these out. I am a big fan of matte lipsticks and if I'm not wearing liquid lipstick that is usually what I gravitate to formula wise.

These Bite Beauty Matte Creme Lip Crayon's are a wonderful product. They glide very easily on the lips and are extremely pigmented. A little goes a long way with the product and you only need one swipe to get the true color on the lips. The formula itself is extremely creamy but easy to apply. They are very moisturizing unlike a lot of matte lipsticks, and I feel that if you are someone who has a problem with matte lipsticks drying your lips out you will love these. However, they do feel thick on the lips and are not thin in consistency. You will definitely feel these on the lips and they feel somewhat like a lipbalm throughout the day. All the shades have a consistent formula as well which is nice. None are less pigmented or dry than the others. These will also transfer and are not kiss proof. If you eat during the day or drink anything you will have to reapply which is a disadvantage to these if you are someone who doesn't want to reapply your lipstick throughout the day. Since these are moisturizing on the lips and are more creamy, they are not extremely matte. They are more of a satin lipstick than a matte in my opinion. My personal favorite shade is Cava because it is very unique in my collection. I see myself using this a lot for my makeup looks since its fantastic by itself and light enough to ombre with other lipsticks that I own. I recommend these if you have been wanting to try out the Bite Beauty Matte Creme Lip Crayons. The formula is great and the color selection is fantastic. I'll definitely be repurchasing these in the future

Hand Swatches:
Here are the hand swatches of each shade. I put barely any pressure on my hand trying these out just to test out the formula.
From top to bottom: Red Velvet, Glace, Cava

Red Velvet
A true red shade with a bit of a blue undertone to it.
It's a 1950's pin-up red.
Any skin tone could rock this shade.

Glace:
This is a darker pink warm toned nude on me.
To me it's a classic dark pink that a lot of people enjoy wearing.
I see this type of lipstick everywhere.
It's an every day shade that would suit a lot of skin tones.

Cava
For me this shade is a light purple pink shade.
It's a very trendy color and is more of a cool toned.
I feel this shade could suit a lot of skin tones, but probably isn't everyone's cup of tea.

-----------------
Pros:
- Extremely creamy
- Non-drying
- Wide shade range for people to select from
- 90% natural ingredients
- Easy to apply
- Sleek packaging
- Highly pigmented

Cons:
- Are not transfer proof
- Are not super matte in the formula
- Ruberized packaging will get dirty over time
- Expensive

I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes.

OGX - Repairing Awapuhi Ginger Shampoo and Conditioner Review

OGX - Repairing Awapuhi Ginger Shampoo and Conditioner Review

Earlier this week I had ran out of conditioner for my hair and was looking to try something new instead of using my go-to Bed Head Re-Energized Shampoo and Conditioner. Mind you, I really like the Bed Head product, but I was feeling a little adventurous and had wanted to try and find something better. As a result I had made a post in Facebook groups asking ladies to recommend what they use themselves.
My hair in retrospect is extremely long being 4-5 inches past my butt. My hair can get oily at the scalp, is normally dry at the ends, and just overall needs something to give it a good ol' boost.
One of the ladies recommended the OGX Repairing Awapuhi Ginger Shampoo and Conditioner. In the past I have really wanted to try OGX but never knew exactly which one to try since my hair was both oily and dry at the same time.

The Claims:
Shampoo: "Heals brittle, frizzy, unruly hair by penetrating each shaft with moisture. The result is soft, touchable, bouny, shiny hair from roots to ends.
Conditioner: "This exclusive formula repairs brittle, frizzy, unruly hair by penetrating each shaft with moisture while refreshing your scalp and removing build up. The result is soft, touchable, bouncy, shiny hair from roots to ends.

My Experience:
So when using this product I must say that a little goes a long way and that less is more. I used less product than I normally would have with my Bed Head shampoo and conditioner. The formula for both the shampoo and conditioner is thick but not super thick, nor super runny (like ones that are mostly water). It has a great consitency and I was overall impressed with it.
I must also mention that the smell is not super fragrant, and that it does not have a 'fake' smell to it. Its not something super potent nor does it linger too long, which is something I prefer for my hair care and body care products. I would say that the smell isnt feminine, but has a really refreshing smell (ill be honest I love the smell of it) and that either men or women could use this product if they are worried about the fragrance. My boyfriend didn't seem to mind it either haha.
When using this product the conditioner was extremely impressive to me, it worked well into my hair without using tons of product. I made sure to leave it in for roughly 10 minutes or so just to make sure that it was going to moisturize my ends.
After I got out of the shower and put my hair up in a towel (no heat styling or blow drying for this girl!) it took less time for my hair to dry than normal. Usually my hair takes roughly 3 hours to fully air dry, but I would say that this took around 90 minutes or so, which made me extremely impressed.

The next day after using this product my hair is less frizzy than normal, super soft, a bit shiny, and less tangled than normal. It feels more hydrated than normal and my ends do not feel as though they are lacking moisture. Normally I am unable to run my fingers through my hair without hitting a knot, but with this product it seems that I am able to do that. Brushing my hair was also a breeze this morning once I got up and it took less time than normal (I use a Wet Brush if anyone is curious)  However I do not feel that it gave me volume what so ever if that is something that is a selling point to you.

Recommendation:
I honestly really recommend this product. I think for the price and availability that it is overall wonderful. It made my hair feel a lot better than it normally does and also decreased on the dryness along with tangliness that my hair usually is. My hair feels overall more healthy and maintainable after using this product. Though I would also try it on sale like me since its a better price.

Pros:
- Drugstore availability
- Not animal tested
- Eco-friendly
- Not super potent fragrance
- Moisturizing but not greasy
- Decrease on tangles
- No frizz
- Easier to brush my hair
- Healthier looking hair
- Do not need to use a lot of product

Cons:
- Slightly expensive for a drugstore product being at $7.99 a bottle for only 13 oz. of product
- Not dye free

Black Moon

Dark, vampy, and slightly mysterious...

Hello my lovelies :)

Been wanting to do a bold black lip for awhile now and just haven't had the time. I paired it with a neutral black smokey eye with a cool undertone burgundy.

When wearing deep lip shades I always feel it's very hard to find a corresponding eye look that will compliment, but not make the lips over powering. This type of smokey eye is very simple, takes very few products (or more as you wish), and can compliment just about any lip color you could think of.

I hope you enjoy what I came up with x
